Abstract

Based on the machining principle of end milling helical flute, the grinding contact area in flute grinding is determined by the grinding wheel position. The equivalent diameters and speeds of the wheel and workpiece in flute grinding are analyzed in the contact area. There exist characteristics of cylindrical grinding and internal grinding in helical flute grinding. Then, considering the effect of plastic upheaval deformation of cemented carbide and tilt angle between wheel speed and workpiece speed on surface roughness, the theoretical model of the surface roughness of helical is established. The effects of grinding wheel diameter, grinding wheel speed and workpiece feed rate on the surface roughness are analyzed. The helical flute grinding test is carried out on a five-axis CNC tool grinder using a standard 1A1 diamond grinding wheel. The surface morphology is investigated by using digital microscope. The surface roughness is measured by white light interferometer. Finally, the validity of the proposed model is verified through grinding experiments. This model provides a theoretical reference for the grinding surface roughness calculation of other shank-type tool helical flute.
